Enhancing Caregiver and Community Support for Children’s Reading Development Outside of School
The Enhancing Caregiver and Community Support for Children’s Reading Development Outside of School report provides evidence-based interventions that engage caregivers and community members to support children’s reading development outside of school. Some interventions work directly with caregivers in their home, while others use community spaces to promote reading skills.
The report also links to case studies of three programs highlighting the effective evidence-based approaches.
- USAID’s Literate Village program in Egypt takes an intergenerational approach, providing literacy courses for caregivers and their children.
- USAID’s Lecture Pour Tous program in Senegal is a bridge between the school and community through social and behavioral change communications to inspire children to read and caregivers to support their children.
- Save the Children’s Catch-Up Clubs, which rely heavily on community volunteers, provide remedial learning opportunities for academically vulnerable students.
To initiate this resource, the Global Reading Network organized a global call among members to source the concepts and examples included in the report.
